As many human resources/learning/culture professionals will know, proving your worth is part of the gig. Showing return on investment, proving the money you have spent has positively impacted an individual, a team or a whole organisation is just what is expected of “enabling services” in a contemporary working life.
I have always represented and advocated for the benefits of development, change management, strategic workforce planning etc…..so when this article popped into my inbox I was intrigued by these words…
“an inconclusive link between HR Development investment and firm financial performance raises the question regarding the effectiveness of HRD investment”
Shut the front door! How can they say an investment in people and teams doesn’t impact the financial performance of the organisation!
After I untwisted my knickers I read the rest of the article and started to understand why they would say that and it was, as everything much more nuanced that one way or another. You can read it here
Fancy article about development and ROE
Something about having to always prove yourself, your team and your function in an organisation makes reading headlines like that……hurt -if I’m honest but insert this quote in my head….
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent” - Eleanor Roosevelt
As a profession, human resources is always out to add value, help others and it can bring a team down if you are always having to “prove it!”.
The flipside of this is the challenge of it!
Making you and your team so valuable they can’t operate with out you, they see the benefits, they respect your opinion and invite you in - what a rush!
I really believe now it’s all about our reaction to these circumstances and I know when I’ve reacted poorly in the past - I’ve paid the price, but when I’ve changed my mindset and thought about all the advice I’d give someone in my own position - it flips things around pretty fast…..this visual is my reminder….
